In August 2002, Biogen opened a state-of-the-art teaching lab in one of its research buildings at its Cambridge, MA headquarters. The Biogen Community Laboratory offers students hands-on experience in science and biotechnology. It is a 1,100 square-foot facility outfitted with the latest lab equipment and computer technology.
Biogen launched the Community Lab with two one-week summer sessions and is offering similar programs for area students during the academic year. Nearly 50 Cambridge Rindge and Latin School students attended a summer program on molecular genetics. Biogen collaborated on the curriculum with the Dolan DNA Learning Center of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the world’s first science center devoted entirely to public genetics education.
Students participated a variety of experiments including extracting their own DNA from cells and purifying proteins from bacteria. Students used the same type of equipment Biogen scientists use every day including, pipettes, centrifuges and PCR machines. Scientists led the instruction and also offered insights on what it’s like to work at the world’s oldest independent biotechnology company.
The Community Lab is designed to be an important resource that can support students and teachers and encourage young people to pursue careers in biotechnology and become the future leaders the industry needs.
The Community Lab offers educational opportunities to local schools and students. The Lab is available for field trips where students and teachers will work with Biogen staff to perform a variety of biology-based labs. Programs will be designed for high school and middle school grades during the academic year and special summer programs. Biogen is also providing the lab for teacher workshops and independent research projects for selected area students.
Other future plans for the facility include creating adult education programs for employees and adults in the community looking to learn some of the core elements of research used in biotechnology.
What people are saying about the Community Lab:
"It’s interesting doing things that I wouldn’t be able to do at school," Cambridge Rindge and Latin senior.
"It’s a great opportunity to be in the lab and to do something you normally can’t do in the summer," Cambridge Rindge and Latin student.
